Castilla y Leon has reached 2.064 MW of wind power installed. This power is divided in 100 operating wind parks, which reasserts the region’s state-of-the-art position in this field. The last data known, from january(2007), confirms that there has been an increase of 176,89 MW with regard to the end of 2004, where Castile and Leon became the first Spanish region in wind power installed. It is a qualitative increase that shows the effort of the wind promoters when developing the regional industry and economy, taking care of the environment. However, the Asociación de Promotores de Energía Eólica de Castilla y León (APECYL) considers that these data are not enough with a view to achieving the objectives of the European Union concerning the development of the renewable energies. The Kyoto Protocol, that came into force last February, bounds to use the wind energy and the rest of renewable energies, which help to reduce, in a considerable way, the pollutant gas emissions and, therefore, to observe the Kyoto agreements.
The wind origin power in the Spanish electric network is significantly increasing. Actually, Spain is the second country world-wide, in wind energy production, behind the unattainable Germany. The potential for the next few years is 10/14 GW.
Each aerogenerator can provide energy to aprx. 165 families, as each wind machine produces 660 kW, and the domestic consumption average is 4 kW.
According to this information, the wind energy installed in Castile and Leon would mean more than 85,000 trees concerning the reduction of pollutant gas emissions.
The 2.064 wind MW in this region avoids the emission of 5,5 million tons of CO2 per year, which helps to minimise the climate change consequences. Moreover, the power installed in the region, is equal to the provision of more than 650,000 families.
This field is creating in Castile and Leon more than 2,700 direct jobs and the promoters have invested more than 1,700 million Euro.
The promoters pay more than 40 million Euro per year in taxes and more than 14 million Euro per year in planning permissions, apart from those quantities for land renting.
The KW/H produced by the wind energy represents an environmental impact 26 times less than the impact produced by coal, 21 times less than oil, 10 times less than nuclear energy and 5 times less than gas.
By not burning those coal Kg, we are avoiding the emission of 4,109 kilograms of CO2, 66 kilograms of sulphur dioxide and 10 kilograms of nitrogen oxide, main causes of acid rain.
The members of the Association are committed to obtain 80% of the aerogenerators components from our region, which involves the promotion of the region’s industrial and social development.
